Yoga is a culture and a way of life that promises a healthy, balanced, peaceful and contended life based on ancient Indian wisdom and culture. Conceived by the great Rishis in their quest for self-realization, yoga is capable not only of ensuring physical well being, mental peace and harmony but also the spiritual up-liftment of man. Yoga had recognized and accepted the importance of the mind and the subconscious over the total human personality much earlier than the interpretations of modern psychology.

The eight divisions of yoga are
Yama - conditional yoga behavior, personal and social.
Niyama - attitude sublimate to yoga norms.
Asana - Discipline of the physical body.
Pranayama- Control over bio-energy through respiratory action.
Prathyahara- withdrawal of the lenses inwards through distraction.
Dharana- concentration
Dhyana - Meditation
Samadhi- Transconsciousness.

Of these first five are referred to as external yoga popularly known as Hatha yoga. The latter three which directly affect the psyche are known as internal (Antharanga) yoga or Raja yoga. The respective sequence of the eight steps is the standard methodology of yoga.

By practicing yogic Asanas (postures) one can conquer Rajo guna and Thamo guna( generally bad qualities)and thus Satva guna (divine qualities) begins to flourish. Man becomes enlightened when Satva guna becomes predominant. Hatha yoga is a means to that end. Yoga leads to spirituality and it controls the mind to the maximum extends. While aiming at spiritualization, we do not mean to neglect the utility of material life nor to under-estimate its importance. Yoga is to adopt the means through which material life can be sublimated into spiritual life.
